"He who jumps to his death has cause. He who leaps has purpose. Always remember I leapt."

This is the note left to a son from his father on the book I am reading. Does this mean that people who jump are driven to it and those who leap have decided upon it? Is it an act of aggression, depression or obsession?

I've only ever known one person who committed suicide. Matt lived in my residence when I started school at Waterloo. We shared a cork-board and that was about it. After living in rez for 8 months I didn't really know much about him except that he liked Star Trek. We only had one conversation that I can remember, it was short and he asked me to turn down my music. After I moved out of rez I never saw him again. I later heard that he had killed himself as a proverbial 'fuck you' to his father. There was some sort of memorial at the school but I didn't attend. He was a mystery to me then and he still is now.

Hello, What is the name of that book you quoted from please?
I read this same book many many years ago (in the early 80's) and I have been trying to remember the title of that book ever since that has the man jumping out the window and the quote (inscribed on his PEN I believe) that said:
"He who jumps to his death has cause. He who leaps has purpose. Always remember I leapt."
